Definition

The elevated temperature (10 to 15°C above ambient) generated by metabolic heat from dense aggregations of blowfly larvae on a decomposing body. Locally accelerates decomposition and insect development rates beyond what ambient ADD calculations predict.

How much hotter is a maggot mass than the air around it?+

A dense aggregation of blowfly larvae can raise the local temperature 10 to 15 degrees Celsius above the surrounding ambient air. This heat comes from the metabolic activity of larvae feeding and growing together on the body.

Why does maggot mass temperature matter in decomposition analysis?+

The elevated temperature speeds up both decomposition and insect development rates beyond what ambient temperature alone would predict. This means using just the air temperature to estimate postmortem interval can give inaccurate results when a large larval mass is present.

Can you always use ambient temperature to estimate how long a body has been dead?+

Not when a substantial maggot mass is active. At Stage 3 of decomposition, the metabolic heat generated invalidates ambient temperature as the sole input for calculating accumulated degree days (ADD). You need to account for the actual temperature at the body site, which can be significantly higher.
