Autolysis
Definition
Self-digestion of cells after death caused by the release of lysosomal enzymes. No microbial involvement is required. Autolysis begins within minutes of death and is accelerated by heat. It creates conditions that hasten subsequent putrefaction.

When does autolysis start after death?+
Autolysis begins within minutes to hours of cardiac arrest, before any microbial breakdown takes place. It happens as cell membranes fail and release their own digestive enzymes, combined with anaerobic chemical reactions that acidify the cells and speed up self-digestion.
Why does temperature matter for autolysis?+
Temperature strongly accelerates autolysis, while cold significantly delays it. This is why bodies decompose much faster in warm conditions and much slower when refrigerated or exposed to cold climates.
What role does autolysis play in decomposition?+
Autolysis softens tissue and breaks down cell structure, which prepares the body for microbial attack. It is the first decomposition process to occur, laying the groundwork for bacteria and other organisms to continue the breakdown.
