Cadaver decomposition island (CDI)

The zone of altered soil chemistry (elevated nitrogen, phosphate, microbial biomass, and volatile organic compounds) beneath and around a decomposing body, persisting for months to years after skeletonisation. Detectable by cadaver dogs and soil chemical sampling.
