When we get something wrong we fix the page and record it here. A quietly edited article is worse than the original error, because it teaches you that you cannot check us.

Each entry names the story, what was wrong, and when we fixed it. The correction also appears on the story itself.

How we handle them
The rule we hold ourselves to, in full.
A correction is for a factual error: a wrong number, a misattributed quote, a claim that does not hold up. A clarification is for something that was accurate but read as more than it was. We do not use either to quietly soften a story we now regret.
Corrections are dated and left standing. We do not remove them once the story is old, and we do not edit the original sentence out of existence without saying that we did. Our editorial standards set out the sourcing and review that is meant to stop errors reaching you in the first place.
