Microclimate Offset
Definition
A temperature correction applied to weather station data to account for the thermal environment at the actual deposition site: shade, building enclosure, vehicle interior, or burial depth. Essential for any ADD calculation; failure to apply offsets is a leading source of PMI error.

Using unadjusted station temperatures in an ADD or PMI calculation systematically shifts the estimated time since death, sometimes by a substantial margin, because the calculation assumes the body experienced regional ambient conditions rather than its actual microenvironment.
How is a microclimate offset actually derived?+
A temperature logger is placed at or near the deposition site, typically for one to two weeks after the body is found, and its readings are compared against the corresponding period at the reference weather station to calculate a consistent correction.
