Ink-Fixative Pretreatment
Definition
Application of a dilute reversible polymer solution (HPMC, Cellugel) to the surface of a still-wet document before drying, forming a gel film that mechanically traps water-soluble ink chromophores in position and prevents their migration as the water recedes.

Common questions
Why must the fixative be applied before the document dries rather than after?+
Water-soluble ink migrates while moisture is still moving through the paper. Once the document dries unfixed, the ink has already bled or feathered, so the treatment window is limited to the wet stage before evaporation redistributes the dye.
Why choose a reversible fixative rather than a permanent coating?+
A reversible polymer can later be removed or will not interfere with subsequent examination techniques such as infrared imaging, preserving the option for further forensic or conservation work on the original document.
