Infestation age is the minimum period an insect or pest population has been established in a location, calculated backward from the oldest (most developed) larvae found. In death investigations, entomologists use this to estimate the postmortem interval, and in neglect or food safety cases, it shows how long conditions have been poor.
How do forensic specialists calculate infestation age?+
They identify the most developed larval stage present and use accumulated degree days (or accumulated temperature data) at the recorded temperature to determine how long that stage takes to develop. This gives a minimum duration, not a maximum, because the infestation could have started even earlier.
Why is it a minimum age rather than an exact age?+
Because the oldest larvae only tell you the infestation must have been there at least as long as it took those larvae to develop. The first insects could have arrived earlier, so you have a floor but not a ceiling.
