Background Infestation
Definition
Pre-existing insect activity in a property unrelated to the victim. The entomologist must distinguish insect evidence directly linked to the victim (on or in wounds) from background structural pests in the environment.

Why does background infestation matter for a postmortem interval estimate?+
If insects from a pre-existing structural infestation, such as cockroaches or stored-product pests, are mistaken for colonisers of the body, their development stage can be used incorrectly to calculate time since death, producing an estimate that has nothing to do with the actual colonisation timeline.
How does an entomologist distinguish background infestation from case-relevant insects?+
The key evidence is location and behaviour: insects recovered directly from wounds, natural orifices, or decomposition fluid on the body are treated as case-relevant, while species found only in unrelated parts of the structure, in stored food, or in wall voids are treated as background and excluded from the interval calculation.
Is background infestation only a concern for bodies found indoors?+
It is most often discussed for indoor and neglect or myiasis cases because structural pest populations are common there, but any location with pre-existing insect activity unrelated to the victim, such as a bin store or drain nearby, can introduce the same confound outdoors.
