Canine STR Multiplex
Definition
A validated set of STR loci used to generate a genotypic profile from dog DNA. The International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) has recommended a standard panel of loci to enable cross-laboratory comparison. Commercial kits based on these loci are used in forensic casework and parentage verification.

Why does a standardized panel of loci matter for canine STR typing?+
Using the ISAG-recommended loci lets profiles generated in different laboratories, or with different commercial kits, be compared directly. Without a shared panel, results from one lab could not be reliably matched against another lab's database or evidence sample.
How is canine STR profiling used in a forensic case?+
It can link a dog's blood, hair, or saliva found at a crime scene to a specific animal, corroborate or refute a suspect's association with a scene through their pet, or confirm parentage in breeding disputes, similarly to how human STR profiling links people to evidence.
Does canine STR profiling use the same loci as human DNA profiling?+
No, dog and human genomes require separate, species-specific STR marker panels, so a canine multiplex kit targets loci validated for canine genetic variability and cannot be substituted with a human forensic STR kit.
