Ayahuasca
Definition
A traditional Amazonian brew combining a DMT-containing plant (Psychotria viridis) with Banisteriopsis caapi containing beta-carboline MAO inhibitors (harmine, harmaline), allowing oral bioavailability of DMT. Subject to religious-use legal exceptions in Brazil and limited US jurisprudence.
- DMT source plant
- Psychotria viridis
- MAOI source plant
- Banisteriopsis caapi
- Active MAOI alkaloids

Common questions
Why is an MAO inhibitor needed for ayahuasca to work?+
DMT alone is broken down by monoamine oxidase in the gut and liver before it can reach the brain, so swallowed DMT has essentially no effect. The beta-carbolines in Banisteriopsis caapi inhibit that enzyme, which lets the DMT from Psychotria viridis survive digestion and become orally active.
Is ayahuasca legal in the United States?+
It depends on the case and circuit. Some US courts have allowed religious groups such as the Uniao do Vegetal and Santo Daime to import and use ayahuasca under religious-freedom protections, but there is no blanket federal exemption and DMT itself remains a controlled substance outside those specific rulings.
How does ayahuasca differ from smoking or vaping pure DMT?+
Smoked DMT is metabolised by MAO far more slowly than orally ingested DMT because it enters the bloodstream through the lungs, so it produces an intense effect lasting only minutes without needing an MAOI. Ayahuasca's oral route, enabled by the MAOI, produces a slower onset and an effect that typically lasts several hours.
