Definition
The binary task of deciding whether a questioned handwriting sample was produced by a specific candidate writer; different from writer identification (open-set ranking) and writer clustering (grouping unidentified samples).

How does writer verification differ practically from writer identification in casework?+
Verification is used when a specific suspect writer is already named and the question is simply yes or no against that one candidate, while identification searches a pool of candidates to rank who is most likely to have produced the questioned sample, which is a broader and often harder task.
When would an examiner use writer clustering instead of verification?+
Clustering is used when there is no named candidate writer at all, such as grouping a set of anonymous threatening letters to determine whether they share a common, unidentified author, which is a different problem from testing against one known suspect.
