Definition
A compact handwriting representation based on the distribution of stroke-segment directions (angles relative to horizontal), computed as a histogram; used in FISH and several other CAHA systems for its scale invariance.

Why is scale invariance useful for handwriting comparison software?+
Writers vary the size of their script across documents and moods, so a feature that ignores absolute size lets the system compare samples written at different scales without a separate normalisation step.
What does theta capture that stroke length does not?+
It captures the directional character of writing movement, such as habitual slant and curvature, independent of how large or fast the individual strokes happen to be on a given page.
