FRStat

Definition

The fingerprint statistical scoring model developed by the FBI Laboratory and Iowa State University (Professor Alicia Carriquiry). Takes ACE-V comparison documentation as input and produces a likelihood ratio using a population frequency database of minutiae configurations to estimate the denominator.

What does FRStat actually do with a fingerprint comparison?+

FRStat takes the detailed work from ACE-V fingerprint analysis and turns it into a likelihood ratio, a number that shows how much more probable the fingerprints came from the same person versus two random different people. It does this by looking at the minutiae patterns in your comparison and checking them against a reference database of known-different fingerprints.

Why do forensic experts use FRStat instead of just saying the prints match?+

FRStat moves fingerprint evidence into probabilistic reporting. Instead of a categorical assertion like match or non-match, the likelihood ratio lets fact-finders understand the actual statistical weight of the evidence. This approach is more transparent about what the data really supports.
