Galton features are the minutiae, or small ridge-level details, that Francis Galton catalogued in his 1892 work. They include ridge endings, bifurcations (Y-shaped ridge splits), dots (short isolated ridges), enclosures (circular or oval ridge formations), and spurs (small branches off a main ridge). These features are the building blocks of fingerprint identification.

Why are they called Galton features if we just call them minutiae now?+

Galton features is the historical name, dating back to his 1892 monograph where he catalogued these ridge details. Today the term minutiae is more common in practice, but Galton features remains the historical reference that acknowledges the foundational work in fingerprint classification.

How do Galton features help identify someone?+

The spatial arrangement of these ridge details is unique to each person. Because no two fingerprints share the same combination of endings, bifurcations, and other features in the same locations, fingerprint examiners use Galton features to compare a print from a scene to a known print and support individualization.
