Chaotropic Salt
Definition
Guanidinium thiocyanate or hydrochloride at 4-6 M concentration. Disrupts the hydration shell of DNA and causes it to bind electrostatically to silica surfaces. Forms the basis of silica-column and magnetic-bead extraction.
