Cell-Free DNA (cfDNA)
Definition
Short DNA fragments (~166 bp) circulating extracellularly in body fluids, shed from apoptotic and necrotic cells. In plasma, predominantly hematopoietic; in pregnancy, includes 10-15% fetal cfDNA from ~10 weeks gestation.
