Definition

The process of establishing through systematic testing that a method does what it claims to do, within defined conditions and with a quantified uncertainty. Validation of development data requires controlled experiments at multiple temperatures with multiple generations.

What's the difference between validation and verification in forensics?+

Validation is when you first test and confirm that a new or modified forensic method actually works as intended. Verification is when you apply an already-validated method to a different lab for the first time. Both confirm the method does what it claims, but validation is the initial proof.

Why do forensic methods need validation testing on known samples?+

Testing against known-outcome datasets lets you measure how often the method gets the right answer (accuracy rate) and how often it makes false claims (false positive and false negative rates). This tells you exactly when and where the method is reliable, so you know what conditions it can safely be used under.

What does 'quantified uncertainty' mean in forensic validation?+

It means you don't just say a method works - you measure by exactly how much it might fail. You determine its accuracy percentage, error rates, sample types, and other conditions where reliability drops. This lets an expert witness and a court understand the method's real limits.
