Why does the Suchey-Brooks system score males and females separately?+
The pubic symphysis surface changes with age at somewhat different rates and patterns between the sexes, so a single combined scale would be less accurate. Separate phase-to-age tables let the same six-phase descriptive scoring be converted into a more accurate age range once the individual's sex is known.
How does the Suchey-Brooks system improve on earlier pubic symphysis methods?+
Earlier systems, such as Todd's phases, were based on smaller and less demographically documented samples. The Suchey-Brooks system drew on a much larger, better-documented modern autopsy sample, which improved the statistical basis for its age ranges and became a widely adopted standard in skeletal age estimation.
