Staphylinidae
Definition
Rove beetles. Recognised by their short elytra (wing covers) leaving the abdomen largely exposed. At carrion scenes, many are predatory on fly larvae; some are primary carrion feeders. They arrive early and remain across multiple decomposition stages.
