What does Rf stand for?+
Rf stands for retention factor. It measures how far a chemical substance travels through a chromatography plate compared to the solvent. The higher the Rf value, the further the substance moved.
Why is Rf always between 0 and 1?+
Rf is a ratio calculated by dividing the distance the analyte traveled by the distance the solvent front traveled. Since the solvent always travels further than any analyte, the result is always a fraction between 0 and 1.
How is Rf used to identify substances in forensic work?+
Forensic chemists compare the Rf value of an unknown substance with the Rf values of known reference standards run on the same chromatography plate. Matching Rf values strongly suggest the substances are the same.
