RAW Capture
Definition
Lossless sensor-data file format (Nikon NEF, Canon CR2/CR3, Sony ARW). Preserves the unprocessed image for evidentiary integrity, allows non-destructive white-balance and exposure correction, and is the format Indian SOCO SOPs require for primary evidence frames.

Common questions
Why does a RAW file matter more for evidentiary integrity than a JPEG from the same shot?+
A JPEG is already processed and compressed by the camera, discarding sensor data permanently. A RAW file preserves the original sensor output, so any later adjustment for exposure or colour is reversible and does not overwrite the original evidentiary data.
Does using RAW capture eliminate the need for a chain-of-custody record for the image file?+
No. RAW capture protects the integrity of the image data itself, but the file still needs the same chain-of-custody documentation, hashing, and storage controls as any other digital evidence item from the moment it is captured.
