Toxin levels in blood or urine can fall or clear quickly, while organs such as liver, kidney, and stomach content retain detectable concentrations for longer, so preserved viscera gives the toxicology lab the best chance of confirming or excluding poisoning at autopsy.
How does an investigation determine whether a death by poisoning is homicide, suicide, or accident?+
The manner is inferred from a combination of the substance identified, the circumstances and scene findings, the victim's access to and history with the substance, and any note, witness account, or occupational exposure context, not from the toxicology result alone.
