Murder requires a higher degree of intention or knowledge, such as intent to cause death or an act so imminently dangerous it must in all probability cause death, whereas culpable homicide not amounting to murder covers less severe degrees of intent or knowledge.

Grave and sudden provocation or genuine private defence can reduce what would otherwise be murder to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, or in some private defence situations remove criminal liability entirely, depending on the facts proved.
