Phenice Method
Definition
A non-metric morphological sex estimation technique published by Thomas Phenice in 1969, based on scoring three traits of the pubic bone: the ventral arc, the sub-pubic concavity, and the medial aspect of the ischiopubic ramus. Combined accuracy on the Terry Collection was 96 per cent.

Common questions
Can the Phenice method be used on a damaged or incomplete pelvis?+
All three traits ideally need to be visible, but examiners can still form an opinion from one or two intact traits, though confidence drops and the result should be reported as tentative rather than definitive.
Why is it considered more reliable than skull-based sexing?+
The pelvis carries a stronger sex signal than the cranium because its shape is directly tied to childbirth mechanics, so pelvic traits like the ventral arc separate male and female specimens more cleanly than cranial shape markers do.
Does the method work equally well across different populations?+
Accuracy figures were derived mainly from the Terry Collection, a North American sample, so later studies on other population groups have found somewhat lower accuracy, prompting recommendations to validate the method locally where possible.
