Obstetric trade-off

The evolutionary conflict in humans between the biomechanical benefit of a narrow pelvis for efficient bipedal locomotion and the obstetric requirement for a wide pelvic passage to accommodate a large-brained infant's head. This conflict drives the sexual dimorphism of the human pelvis.
