Why is passive authentication needed when active methods like watermarking exist?+

Most images in circulation, including those from unknown or uncooperative sources, were never watermarked or signed at capture, so passive analysis is the only option for authenticating them after the fact.

What is a limitation of passive blind authentication?+

Because it relies only on statistical traces already in the image, sophisticated post-processing or re-compression can obscure or remove the very artefacts the analysis depends on.
