CFPB is the Central Fingerprint Bureau, historically the national repository for fingerprint records, while NAFIS is the Automated Fingerprint Identification System that digitised and networked that matching function across states, so NAFIS is the modern searchable system built on the function CFPB traditionally held.

Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems links police stations across India into a shared database of FIRs and case records, letting an officer in one state query records entered by another, which was not possible when each state or district kept isolated paper or local digital records.
