Common questions
How does IBIN differ from a national system like NIBIN?+
NIBIN and similar national networks compare evidence within one country's cases, while IBIN sits above them to flag matches across borders, which is essential when a firearm or ammunition batch moves between jurisdictions.
Does a hit in IBIN count as a positive identification in court?+
No. It returns a ranked candidate list for further human examination; a courtroom identification still requires a qualified examiner's independent comparison of the physical evidence.
