Haplogroup
Definition
A monophyletic branch of the human mitochondrial (or Y-chromosome) phylogenetic tree defined by a set of derived mutations. Haplogroup assignment is the first step in placing an mtDNA or Y-STR haplotype within the known landscape of human genetic diversity.
