Why is e-coat forensically useful in paint examination?+
Because it is applied to the entire bare shell before any colour coats, its composition and thickness are consistent within a given vehicle assembly plant and model run, so matching e-coat layers between a paint transfer and a suspect vehicle helps narrow the source rather than relying on the visible colour coat alone.
How is e-coat distinguished from the colour and clear coats above it in a paint cross-section?+
In a microscopic cross-section it typically appears as a thin, often grey or off-white layer directly against the metal substrate, distinguishable by its position, thickness, and cathodic-deposition uniformity from the pigmented basecoat and the topmost clearcoat applied later in the process.
