Ectocranial Scoring
Definition
Assessment of cranial suture closure from the outer surface of the skull; slightly later than endocranial closure and more easily assessable on intact calvaria, but with higher inter-individual variability at equivalent ages.

Why use ectocranial rather than endocranial scoring when both are available?+
The ectocranial surface is accessible without opening the cranial vault, making it practical on an intact skull, whereas endocranial scoring requires viewing the inner table, which is only possible if the calvaria is separated or imaged internally.
Why is ectocranial scoring alone considered less reliable than combined methods?+
Because suture closure on the outer table shows wide variability between individuals at the same chronological age, ectocranial scores are typically combined with other indicators, such as rib end or pubic symphysis morphology, to produce a more defensible age range.
