Definition
The progressive replacement of fibrous suture tissue by bone along the joints between skull bones; the Meindl-Lovejoy 1985 system scores ten ectocranial sites on the vault and lateral-anterior surfaces to produce a composite age estimate.

Common questions
Why is cranial suture closure used mainly for older adults?+
Long bone epiphyses and the pubic symphysis give tighter age brackets in younger and middle-aged individuals. Suture closure becomes the more useful indicator once those markers have already reached their end state, typically past the fifth or sixth decade.
How reliable is suture closure alone as an age indicator?+
It has wide error margins because closure timing varies with sex, ancestry, and individual biology, so it is combined with sternal rib end morphology and other skeletal indicators rather than used as a standalone estimate.
