Deconvolution

Definition

A computational technique that estimates the PSF and inverts its effect to recover a sharper image. The quality depends entirely on how accurately the PSF is known. Errors in the PSF estimate introduce ringing artefacts.

Deconvolution is the statistical process of separating mixed DNA profiles into the individual profiles of each person who contributed to the sample. When multiple people's DNA gets mixed together, deconvolution helps identify who was present and in what proportions.

Deconvolution is a computational technique that estimates the point spread function (PSF) and reverses its effects to recover a sharper image. The success of this method depends entirely on how accurately the PSF is known, since errors in the estimate will create ringing artifacts in the result.

Why is knowing the point spread function critical for image deconvolution?+

The PSF describes how the imaging system blurs light. If you know it accurately, you can mathematically invert its effect and restore sharpness. But if your PSF estimate is wrong, the inversion produces visible distortions called ringing artifacts rather than a clearer image.
