Conspicuity

Definition

The degree to which a pedestrian or cyclist is detectable against their background under the prevailing lighting conditions. It governs the detection distance available to the driver and thus the time available to react and brake.

How does conspicuity differ from visibility in a collision analysis?+

Visibility asks whether an object could theoretically be seen given sightlines and obstructions. Conspicuity asks whether it would actually stand out and be noticed against its background under the lighting present at the time, which is why dark clothing on an unlit road can be technically visible yet poorly conspicuous.

What evidence do analysts use to reconstruct conspicuity after the fact?+

Scene photographs taken under matched lighting and time of day, clothing recovered from the pedestrian or cyclist, and sometimes photometric measurements of headlight illumination and ambient light at the collision location. These feed into a perception-reaction time estimate for the driver.
