Blending Mask

Definition

In face-swap pipelines, a pixel-level mask that defines the face region to be composited onto the target frame. Imperfect masks leave boundary artifacts: color discontinuities, sharpness mismatches, or halo effects at the face perimeter.

Context
Face-swap and deepfake compositing pipelines
Function
Defines the pixel region composited from source face onto target frame
Common artefact
Boundary halo or sharpness mismatch at mask edge
Forensic use
Edge inconsistency is a manual and algorithmic detection cue

Common questions

What causes visible artefacts at a blending mask boundary?+

The swapped face region is usually rendered at a different resolution, lighting model, or compression history than the surrounding frame. When the mask edge does not perfectly track natural features like hairline or jaw contour, the mismatch shows up as a colour step, a soft halo, or a slight blur ring that real footage does not produce.

How do analysts use blending mask artefacts to flag a deepfake?+

Frame-by-frame inspection or automated edge-consistency detectors look for a fixed-shape boundary that persists across frames even as the face moves, since a genuine face has no such seam. Frequency-domain analysis can also reveal a sharpness discontinuity right at the mask perimeter that would not exist in an unaltered recording.
