What is the basic field kit meant to accomplish that the SOCO's kit does not need to?+
It is designed for first responders to secure and preserve a scene, prevent contamination, and capture perishable evidence before a specialist arrives, rather than to conduct the detailed collection and packaging a scene of crime officer performs once on site.
Why is a digital camera included in a kit this basic?+
A quick photographic record of the scene as first encountered captures transient conditions, such as an open door, a light left on, or an item's original position, that could change before the SOCO arrives and that written notes alone would not preserve as reliably.
