Punjabi University, Patiala, is a state university established in 1962, the second university in the world named after a language. It serves Punjab through university teaching departments and affiliated colleges.
Why it matters for forensic students: The Department of Forensic Science has a notable place in Indian forensic education. It began in 1974 as a section within the Department of Chemistry and became an independent department in 1989, recognised as the first forensic science department in northern India. It has held UGC Special Assistance Programme and DST FIST support for laboratory infrastructure. M.Sc. students complete a mandatory attachment to central and state Forensic Science Laboratories, working on real case material, and the department holds an MoU with the State Forensic Science Laboratory, Jaipur.
