The M.Sc. Forensic Science programme is an interdisciplinary and self-financed course designed to provide students with comprehensive knowledge in forensic and allied sciences. The programme combines core subjects from pure and applied sciences such as Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Botany, Zoology, Genetics, Microbiology, Geology, and Computer Science along with supporting disciplines including Medicine, Engineering, Law, Psychology, Statistics, Instrumentation, Communication Skills, and Management. This multidisciplinary approach helps students develop both scientific understanding and practical investigative skills required in modern forensic science.

The course was introduced during the academic session 2000–2001 under the Department of Chemistry at Osmania University with the support of the Andhra Pradesh State Forensic Science Laboratory through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Later, in 2006, the Department of Forensic Science under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, also extended its support to the programme through another MoU.

To strengthen practical exposure and research opportunities, students receive training and laboratory attachments at institutions such as the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Hyderabad, and the AP State Forensic Science Laboratory. Renowned research institutions including IICT, CCMB, CDFD, and CDTS also contribute to the academic and practical training of students. The programme emphasizes the growing importance of scientific investigation in the criminal justice system, encouraging the use of modern forensic techniques for accurate and objective crime analysis.
