UK Police Watchdog Warns AI Misuse Could Undermine Criminal Cases

The UK’s Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has warned that unclear rules governing artificial intelligence use in policing could expose officers to misconduct investigations and undermine confidence in criminal proceedings.

In a statement published on October 13, the watchdog said it had written to the National Police Chiefs’ Council urging police forces to review their AI policies and ensure staff understand what uses are permitted.

The warning follows referrals involving allegations that police personnel used AI inappropriately or outside existing force guidance. The IOPC confirmed that it is conducting two independent investigations into AI-related gross misconduct allegations, while other cases are being handled or have been completed by individual police forces.

The watchdog stressed that AI can offer benefits to policing but said its use requires clear rules, practical training and regular policy reviews. Staff who use AI to speed up routine work could face consequences if the technology is used in ways that breach professional standards.

For digital-forensics teams, the warning raises questions about the verification of AI-generated investigative documents, the accuracy of machine-generated summaries and the need to preserve accountability when AI contributes to evidence handling or case preparation.

The IOPC has called for stronger oversight so that innovation does not compromise public trust or the integrity of investigations.
