Cyber Incident Disrupts Grocery Operations Across the US and Europe

Dutch retail group Ahold Delhaize is investigating a cybersecurity incident that has disrupted some grocery operations in the United States, the Netherlands and Belgium.

The company confirmed on October 13 that it had taken precautionary measures, including disconnecting certain systems, while its teams investigate the incident and work to restore affected services.

The disruption has affected online grocery orders, distribution operations and customer services at some of its retail brands. In the Netherlands, Albert Heijn reported problems with its website, app and deliveries, while Belgian retailer Delhaize also experienced service disruptions.

Ahold Delhaize said its stores remained open and that it was beginning a controlled relaunch of certain systems. The company added that, at the time of its statement, it had no evidence that customer or employee data had been taken in this incident.

The company has not disclosed the initial access method, the nature of the security issue or whether the incident involved ransomware. Those details remain unconfirmed as the investigation continues.

For incident responders and digital-forensics investigators, the case highlights the importance of examining system logs, preserving network evidence and establishing a reliable timeline when an organization takes systems offline to contain a potential threat.

The investigation’s findings could clarify the incident’s cause and whether sensitive information was affected.
