Australia Charges Man After Border Officers Find Alleged Child Abuse Material on Phone

A 23-year-old man has been charged in Australia after Australian Border Force (ABF) officers allegedly found child abuse material on his mobile phone during an examination at Canberra Airport.

According to ACT Policing, the man was intercepted after arriving on a flight from Bali. Officers allegedly identified child exploitation material on his phone during the examination.

Police later executed a search warrant at his home in Gordon, where further alleged child exploitation material was found on electronic devices.

The man has been charged with two counts of possessing child exploitation material and is expected to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court.

The investigation is continuing, with police saying the seized electronic devices will undergo forensic examination. Further charges could follow depending on the results of that examination.

The case highlights the role of digital forensics in investigations that begin with border screening, where an initial device examination can lead to the seizure and forensic analysis of additional electronic evidence.

The allegations have not been tested in court.
