543 Stolen Phones Recovered Across India Using CEIR

Mathura Police have recovered 543 lost and stolen mobile phones worth around ₹2 crore in a recovery drive using India’s Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal and police surveillance teams.

The phones were reported missing or stolen between May 12 and September 30, 2026 and were traced from different parts of the country. Police coordinated with law-enforcement agencies in neighbouring states when devices were found outside Uttar Pradesh.

A large number of the recovered devices belonged to pilgrims and visitors who had travelled to Mathura and nearby religious destinations.

Vrindavan Police Station recorded the highest number of recoveries with 140 phones, followed by Goverdhan with 72 and the Tourism Police Station with 64.

Police said 311 phones had already been returned to their owners at individual police stations, while the remaining recovered devices were handed back at the Police Lines.

The operation highlights how India's CEIR system can assist investigators in tracing devices reported as lost or stolen, even when those devices move across state borders.

For mobile-forensics investigators, the case is another example of how device identifiers, telecommunications data and police databases can work together to recover digital evidence and property.
