Switch (Trigger)

Definition

Closes the firing circuit. Time-delay, command-wired, radio-controlled (RCIED), or victim-operated (pressure plate, tripwire, anti-handling).

Function
Closes the firing circuit of an IED
Timed type
Time-delay switch
Remote type
Command-wire or radio-controlled (RCIED)
Victim-operated types
Pressure plate, tripwire, anti-handling switch
Examination focus
Circuit path, power source, and switch mechanism

Common questions

Why does the switch type matter for a post-blast forensic reconstruction?+

The switch type indicates the intended trigger method and, for a victim-operated device, whether the target was meant to be indiscriminate (tripwire, pressure plate) or specific (command-wire, radio), which shapes both the investigative lead set and the safety protocol for scene clearance.

What is an anti-handling switch and why is it treated as a separate hazard?+

It is a secondary switch designed to trigger detonation if the device is moved, disturbed, or tampered with, intended to injure the person attempting to disarm or remove it. Its presence means render-safe procedures must assume a booby-trap layer beyond the primary trigger.

How can examiners distinguish a command-wire from a radio-controlled trigger after detonation?+

Command-wire devices leave physical wire remnants running from the device toward a firing point, while RCIED remains show a receiver module and antenna fragments; recovered circuit components and any surviving wire runs are key physical evidence for this distinction.
