Definition
A content binding using a perceptual fingerprint or watermark embedded in the signal rather than the file bytes. Designed to survive format conversion and re-encoding. Less precise than a hard binding but more resilient in distribution workflows.

Why is soft binding described as less precise than hard binding?+
A hard binding, such as a cryptographic hash of the exact file bytes, is broken by even a single-bit change, which makes it very precise but fragile. A perceptual fingerprint tolerates changes like recompression or resizing, but that tolerance means it cannot detect small manipulations as reliably.
In what workflow does soft binding matter more than hard binding?+
It matters wherever content is re-encoded or reformatted as it moves through distribution, such as social media platforms that strip metadata and recompress uploads. A hard binding would be destroyed by that process, while a soft binding embedded in the signal can survive it.
