Common questions

How does simple hurt differ from grievous hurt in practice?+

Grievous hurt is defined by eight specific listed injuries, such as fracture, dislocation, or emasculation, that carry heavier punishment; any bodily hurt caused voluntarily that does not meet one of those eight clauses is classified as simple hurt instead.

How did simple hurt relate to the older Indian Penal Code?+

Under the earlier IPC, the equivalent offence was defined in Section 319 with punishment under Section 323; the BNS 2023 replaced these with Sections 116 and 115 respectively, carrying the same basic distinction forward.
