Root Transparency
Definition
Translucency of the root dentine advancing from the apex upward, caused by mineralisation of the dentinal tubules. It is one of Gustafson's most reliable criteria and increases steadily with age.

How is root transparency measured in practice?+
A thin ground section of the extracted tooth root is examined under transmitted light, and the length of the transparent (translucent) zone from the apex is measured and correlated against reference age data.
Does root transparency work well on its own for age estimation?+
It is more reliable when combined with Gustafson's other criteria, such as secondary dentine deposition and cementum apposition, since relying on a single criterion increases the margin of error in the final age estimate.
