Common questions

Why does forensic anthropology use a four-tier opinion scale instead of a binary match or no-match conclusion?+

Skeletal identification often rests on probabilistic features like bone morphology or estimated age range rather than a unique identifier, so the graded scale lets an anthropologist express the actual strength of the evidence rather than overstating certainty a binary conclusion would imply.

What distinguishes 'cannot exclude' from 'consistent with' in this framework?+

'Consistent with' indicates the antemortem and postmortem data align on the features examined without contradiction, while 'cannot exclude' is a weaker statement used when data is limited or inconclusive, meaning the evidence does not rule out the individual but also does not positively support the match.
