Pupariation
Definition
The process by which the third-instar larva contracts and hardens its own cuticle to form the puparial case (puparium) that encloses the pupa. The puparium is the hardened L3 skin; the pupa is the metamorphosing insect inside it.

What's the difference between pupariation and the puparium?+
Pupariation is the process itself: when a third-instar larva stops feeding, contracts, and hardens its own larval skin. The puparium is the hardened case that results from that process. Inside the puparium is the pupa, the metamorphosing insect. So pupariation is the action, puparium is the protective container.
Why do forensic entomologists track pupariation?+
The date pupariation is first observed is a key milestone for estimating how long an insect has been developing. Blow flies go through distinct life stages, and pinpointing when a larva transitions to the pupal stage helps establish the post-mortem interval in death investigations.
