Definition
A fraud type in which the original holder's photograph on a genuine document is replaced with the fraudster's image, typically by lifting the laminate; defeated by laser-engraved polycarbonate pages and detectable by oblique-light laminate examination on older documents.

Why doesn't photo substitution work on modern polycarbonate passports?+
The photograph is laser-engraved directly into the polycarbonate data page rather than laminated on top of it, so there is no separable laminate layer to lift and replace without visibly destroying the page.

Oblique lighting highlights surface irregularities such as lifted or re-laid laminate edges, adhesive residue, and inconsistent gloss or texture around the photo area that are invisible under normal straight-on viewing.
