Friction ridge patterns form in the womb and remain stable from birth through death. The papillary dermis, the deeper skin layer that creates these ridges, preserves the pattern even during decomposition. This stability is why a single recorded print can be matched to someone years or decades after it was deposited.
How long does trace evidence stay on a surface?+
It depends on what the material is and what happens to the surface. Soil in deep tire treads or trapped in fabric fibers can persist longer than material on smooth leather, which loses particles more easily through contact, washing, or brushing. The longer a person is active after picking up a trace, the more they shed it.
Does the type of surface affect how long soil sticks to it?+
